Northern Territory Extended Tours
Land of the Dreamtime
The hardest thing about planning a tour to Australia's famous Outback is when to turn back! Do you turn around at the shimmering heart in Alice Springs or do you go further onto the Dreamtime land of the Never Never?
There are generally two trains of thought...a Red Centre Tour centring on Uluru and Katatjuta from around 13 to 15 days or the supreme quest...16 to 21 days to the Top End.
Touring to the Red Centre can include fascinating stopovers at places like Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy, the latter worthy of a extra night if time allows to fully appreciate Australia's best known and largest opal producing centre. Stopping over in Uluru was once a logistics nightmare but nowadays, with the increasing range of accommodation, is generally easily managed with a 2 or 3 night stay. Uluru is Australia's most famous natural feature, the world's biggest monolith and at first sight an overwhelming experience. Catch the magical sunsets, walk the base and learn the Aboriginal legends from guides and, if time and opportunity allows, make the stiff climb to the summit. Nearby is the Katatjuta, a jumble of 30 brilliant red monoliths generally known as The Olgas.
Alice Springs allows for a relaxed, extended stay in one Hotel touring out each day to wonderful attractions like the gnarling grandeur of the MacDonnell Ranges and its better known features - Standley Chasm, Simpson's Gap and Glen Helen Gorge. Have a laugh as you learn to ride camels, learn Aboriginal culture and ways at the award winning Desert Park, see the historic old Telegraph Station, hear of the importance of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and more. There are 4WD tours to places like Palm Valley and evening dinners at the Winery, which can all be included before returning to the East Coast via the Devils Marbles, Tennant Creek and the Queensland Outback.
