Away from the wineries and vineyards of the Hunter discover a wonderful array of galleries and attractions. The Wine Country is bursting with a blend of sophisticated and country style art 'n craft galleries, gourmet food delights, jewellery, glasswork, wrought iron and a growing number of antique stores.Within an hour's drive there's even more attractions. Relive our colonial days in the bush at Wollombi or down by the river in Morpeth, two historical towns seemingly unchanged by time. Get in touch with nature at the only Zoo in the Hunter or touring through a State Forest. There's so much to do and see - getting there is easy, it's leaving that's difficult!
Australian Woodwork Gallery
Just minutes from the Hunter Valley Vineyards, the Gallery has been purpose built to showcase the beauty and diversity of our native timbers, crafted with skill and imagination by the best Australian designer-makers. Walk through the Gallery and view the wide range of unique and hand crafted gifts. Items are also available at their Darling Harbour store in Sydney.
Simply d'vine Nursery
is just across the road and can be included in your itinerary! Famous for fountains, the nursery boasts new and exciting ranges of high quality plants. Water features remain the major drawcards for visitors with over 50 of display and available. Add to this a fabulous range of gifts, jewellery and homewares to complete any home. Follow the Brokenback Wine Trail to Pokolbin Gallery at Mistletoe Wines. The exhibits include original paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glassware and woodwork. If you have time try the premium Mistletoe Wines. Move down to Butterflies Gallery, set in beautiful cottage gardens with changing exhibitions of original art works and displays of contemporary, traditional and decorative work from Australian artists and craftspeople.
After browsing the gallery morningtea is served in Mallee's Café. Next stop Pepper Creek Antiques is sure to please. Here you'll find antique jewellery, colonial and Victorian antiques, china and silver and other fine collectables before returning to your accommodation.
Rusa Park Zoo
Discover the animals of Australia up close and personal. Rusa Park is a hands-on park where most of the animals can be patted and fed. Wander the 20 acres of farmland with Koalas, Kangaroos, Deer, Snakes, Lizards, Wombats, Monkeys & more. There's also a huge walk- through aviary of indigenous and overseas parrots.
Mountian Scenery
Wattagan Mountains Soar high into the towering Eucalypt Forest of the Wattagan Mountains on the outskirts of the Wine Country. Take in spectacular sights from the many lookouts - some with views to the coast. Wander through lush green rainforest areas and across crystal clear creeks with water that fresh you can taste it! And the wildlife is abundant - lyrebirds, wallabies, goannas, wombats and more.
Historic Wollombi
Follow the winding brook to Wollombi, a charming turn-of-the-century village steeped in Aboriginal, Convict and Bushranger legend. Enjoy a cuppa before a guided tour of the village. Hear tales from the past, Aboriginal Legends and infamous bushrangers who once roamed the area. Afterwards wander the village at your leisure visiting the many arts 'n crafts, antiques and specialty stores. For the adventurous wander down to the Wollombi Tavern and try their famous Dr. Jurds Jungle Juice, if you're game.
Hunter River
Step back in time at historic Morpeth, an enchanting 19th century village that in its day was the busiest inland port in Australia. Enjoy an old fashioned devonshire tea overlooking the banks of the Hunter River before a guided tour with one of the local identities, famous for welcoming visitors. Afterwards rummage through the many antique shops with collectables from colonial days, purchase linen and fine lace, there's arts 'n crafts stores galore, lollies and specialty stores to explore around every sandstone paved corner.
